Webmin, an open-source tool written in Perl, is a web-based interface used for Linux system administration purposes. Webmin helps the users in user accounts management, disk quota management and file configurations. Not only this, with Webmin, ont can easily manage services like Apache server, MySQL, PHP and file sharing, to name a few. Being a web-based application, it uses TCP port 10000 for handling the communication part through a web browser.

This article will guide you to install the latest version on the said application - Webmin 1.670 in your Ubuntu/Linux Mint Systems (or Debian based systems I should say). Before that, make sure that you have installed LAMP server in your system. If you do not know how to do that, please refer to our article: LAMP Server- Installation and Configuration in Linux.

Fixes in This Version

  • More German translation updates thanks to Raymond Vetter, Catalan from Jaume Badiella, Norwegian updates from Stein-Aksel Basma and Bahasa Malaysia from Nawawi Jamili, Nizam Adnan and Weldan Jamili.
  • Updated the Webmin Users, Webmin Configuration and Squid modules to use the standard UI library for a more consistent and themable UI.
  • Added binary slave zone support and invalid chroot detection to the BIND module.
  • Made the flow in the Disk Quotas module for enabling quotas from scratch simpler.
  • Fixed FTP transfers to support IPv6-only servers, and added IPv6 network size support to Webmin's address-based access control.
  • Added filtering for lists in the user, group and file chooser popups, thanks to a patch from Nawawi Jamili.
  • Added support for rolling back LVM snapshots, thanks to a patch from Caspar Smit.
  • Updated the Perl code in multiple modules to be strict and warnings compliant, to better detect bugs

Installation

1. We need to edit "/etc/apt/sources.list" file. You can use your favorite text editor for that.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Add following lines at the end of the file:

deb http://download.webmin.com/download/repository sarge contrib
deb http://webmin.mirror.somersettechsolutions.co.uk/repository sarge contrib
Save the file and close it.

2. Import the GPG key.

wget http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc
sudo apt-key add jcameron-key.asc
sudo apt-get update
3. Update the local repository.

sudo apt-get update
4. Install the Webmin application.

sudo apt-get install webmin

Using Webmin

Before you launch the application, make sure that the webmin service is already running. You can do it so by entering following command:

sudo service webmin status
You can start the webmin service by issuing following command:

sudo service webmin start
Now, you are ready to use webmin. Open your browser and go to the address http://localhost:10000/. You will be asked to enter Username and Password. Enter root as Username and current root password in the Password field. If you haven't yet assigned any password to your root account, you can do it now by using following command:

sudo passwd
Now, using these credentials, you can access Webmin control panel.

To restart the application, just enter following command:

sudo service webmin restart

Simple !!
