The latest version of Nvidia Graphics driver for Linux which is Nvidia 337.12 has been released and is available for download. It comes with plenty of fixes and changes. This article will guide you to install Nvidia 337.12 in Ubuntu and Linux Mint systems.

Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that could cause OpenGL programs to freeze under some low memory conditions.
  • Updated the display configuration page in nvidia-settings to uniquely identify DisplayPort 1.2 monitors by displaying the monitor GUIDs.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause ECC settings to be displayed incorrectly in nvidia-settings when changing ECC settings on a multi-GPU system.
  • Removed the "OnDemandVBlankInterrupts" X configuration option: this option has been enabled by default since version 177.68 of the NVIDIA Unix driver, and the documentation had not been updated to reflect the new default value.
  • Fixed a bug that caused GPU errors when hotplugging daisy-chained DisplayPort 1.2 displays.
  • Updated the color correction settings page in the nvidia-settings control panel to reflect gamma changes made by other RandR clients while the control panel was already running.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the use of multiple simultaneous X servers on UEFI systems.
  • Updated the nvidia-settings source package to build libXNVCtrl when building nvidia-settings, instead of relying on a pre-built library.
  • Added the ability to over- and under-clock certain GeForce GPUs in the GeForce GTX 400 series and later. For GPUs that allow it, an offset can be applied to clock values in some clock domains of some performance levels. This clock manipulation is done at the user's own risk. See the README documentation of the "CoolBits" X configuration option for more details.
  • Updated the minimum required version of GTK+ from 2.2 to 2.4 for nvidia-settings and many more...

Installation

Uninstall the previously installed version of Nvidia graphics driver (if any).

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
End the graphic session with the appropriate command from the list of commands given below:

# For Ubuntu LightDM [DEFAULT]
sudo service lightdm stop

#For Gnome GDM
sudo service gdm stop

#For Linux Mint MDM
sudo service mdm stop
Download the appropriate driver from the source. Here are the download links:
 Make the installer file executable.

chmod 777 ~/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-*-337.12.run

Run the executable installer file.

sudo sh ~/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-*-337.12.run

This will start the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Note : Do not delete the installer file. It will be needed while removing/uninstalling the Nvidia 337.12 driver if it fails to work properly.

To uninstall,

sudo sh ~/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-*-337.12.run --uninstall

  1. When I go to terminal and do "sudo service mdm stop" it goes black and don't go back till I physically switch the computer off, then the termination processes appear, and so I can't install the official driver.

  2. Felipe: if you can, try to hit ctrl+alt+F1 after stopping mdm

  3. After installation, how should open the graphical mode? I've tried with startx but screen goes black.

    Thank you for your guide.

    1. Start the service just like you stopped it. (replace stop with start)
