How To : Install/Upgrade to Linux Kernel 4.5-RC6 in Ubuntu/Linux Mint Systems

    The Linux Kernel 4.5-RC6 is now available for the users, announced Linus Torvalds. This Linux Kernel version comes with plenty of fixes and improvements. This article will guide you to install or upgrade to Linux Kernel 4.5-RC6 in your Ubuntu or Linux Mint system.


Installation

For 32-Bit Systems

Download the .deb packages.

$ wget kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc6-wily/linux-headers-4.5.0-040500rc6_4.5.0-040500rc6.201602281230_all.deb

$ wget kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc6-wily/linux-headers-4.5.0-040500rc6-generic_4.5.0-040500rc6.201602281230_i386.deb

$ wget kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc6-wily/linux-image-4.5.0-040500rc6-generic_4.5.0-040500rc6.201602281230_i386.deb
Install them.

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.5*.deb linux-image-4.5*.deb
Reboot the system.

sudo reboot

For 64-Bit Systems

Download the .deb packages.

$ wget kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc6-wily/linux-headers-4.5.0-040500rc6_4.5.0-040500rc6.201602281230_all.deb

$ wget kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc6-wily/linux-headers-4.5.0-040500rc6-generic_4.5.0-040500rc6.201602281230_amd64.deb

$ wget kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc6-wily/linux-image-4.5.0-040500rc6-generic_4.5.0-040500rc6.201602281230_amd64.deb
Install them.

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.5*.deb linux-image-4.5*.deb
Reboot the system.

sudo reboot

To uninstall,

sudo apt-get remove 'linux-headers-4.5*' 'linux-image-4.5*'

  1. I'm on kubuntu 15.10, it's not as solid as I was hoping it was. I'm considering going back to 14.04, and just upgrading to plasma5 (I do like it!) For speed with compiling Android Roms, and Android Kernels, would you choose 4.5 rc6, or 4.4.3 on 14.04?

  2. I installed it on a Lenovo T410s which had LinuxMint 17.3 as OS and all problems with videos and webcam just went away, so I am a very happy camper!
